To become “Kong” through “Bu” (enlightenment)
The Chinese word- “Kong”; usually defined as “not have” or “not being”, communicates a very different semantic meaning than the English word- “Emptiness”.  The “Kong” in Chinese philosophy does not imply “non-existence”, which is the wisdom of Buddhist sutra- “Kongjishise: Color does not differ from air, air no heterochromia. Sex is Zero”.  Instead, by freeing our perspectives to “Kong”; we are entering a different “have” or “being”.

Nova’s BuKong project is our attempt to gain new perspectives by incorporating traditional art and craft of the East with mass-production-based industrial design knowledge of the West.  This is an on-going exploration of integrating different design cultures: from interchanging aesthetics value to connecting material experience and implementing craftsmanship.

Followed its introduction to China from Master Tang’s pilgrimage west based on classic Chinese fiction novel- "Journey to the West", Buddhism was enriched and amplified after being merged with other Chinese philosophies and ideas such as Confucianism, Taoism and Zen.  We see a similar historical parallel of industrial design development in China as it also is an “imported” discipline from the West.  Today, China has already become an important global player in practicing this profession and training industrial designers. Industrial Design will continue to flourish, evolve and grow in China.  This is also our hope and expectation through the endeavor of “BuKong”.
